Voicechat?

Post by Groulien on Mon Aug 04, 2008 9:01 am

We're a clan and I think we could use a teamspeak program.
Now, I know of 4 different teamspeak programs.

1. Teamspeak
2. Roger Wilco -> Roger Wilco Screenshots
3. MSN messenger /Windows live messenger
4. Xfire

1.Teamspeak
Teamspeak is a low banwith voice chat application.
There is client and server.
Clients can only connect to servers and servers cost money to host.
The user can configure:
Audio quality affecting the bandwith speed.
Voice or key activation

2. Roger Wilco
This is a program I found out when installing my keyboard driver.
I had never heard of it before but decided to give it a go.
The program was developed by a team with no name and the program was bought by gamespy at a certain point.
The program is easy to use, and people can create their own channels for free.
Channels can be configured with:
Public (yes, no)
Password (empty is no)
The user can configure:
Audio quality affecting the bandwith speed.
Voice or key activation

The user can configure:
Audio quality affecting the bandwith speed.
Voice or key activation

3. MSN messenger /Windows live messenger
MSN messsenger users can also talk with oneanother.
This is not voice activated nor key activated, it is always active.
The speaker has a voice limiter, if the voice goes too loud, it doesn't send.
The speed is quite well, but I do not know the processor intensity.
I don't know the max amount of users either.

4. Xfire
Xfire is made by MTV and is used by more than 10 million people.
Most of 'em don't have a microphone. Because it's an in-game chat program.

A small while ago, xfire has been updated with game capture ability (like FRAPS).
Xfire can record in-game audio and video, depending on you sound-card it might not record your in-game sound.

Xfire does allow you to use speech conversations but is most likely to be more processor intensive.
The speed of Xfire is slower than MSN and is most likely the slowest of the 4.

Program:
  • Cost
  • Speed
  • max users

Teamspeak:
  • Pay per slot
  • Dunno
  • Depends on pay
Roger Wilco:
  • Free,
  • dunno,
  • high
MSN/WLM:
  • Free
  • 0,5 (maybe less)
  • dunno
Xfire
  • Free
  • 1s (feels like it buffers and sends it afterwards)
  • dunno

Personal choice: Roger Wilco
|_Free, can be public + password protected = easy acces + secure.

If you don't want a voice chat program, vote NONE.
Poll lasts 30 days.

I guess we dont have many options.

Eighter Roger Wilco or Teamspeak, but teamspeak is a payed option.

WLM can work too but then you need to make a group converstaion and if someone wants to join the server another one (who is allready in the session and server) has to invite him to the "chat/voice" session (by switching to windows)

I got 0 problems with switching between Halo and Windows, so if we choose WLM, I can intive 'em.

I downloaded Roger Wilco (it's really small, 790kb) the set up is really easy and the sound quality is good. I can join my own channel although i dont know if user outside my home network can. I think we should give this program a try.

Clients meet in a server.
Clients speak and the server processes it all.
Server = Chatbox, Clien = User.

We should use teamspeak 2, it's being used a lot more than the others and all seem to be in favour of it.
You'd best download Teamspeak Client.
Those who are against, speak now or I shall lock this topic.

*Topic shall be locked on 18 august at 20:00 GMT+0*

As Groulien said this topic will be locked tomorrow.

So I will give a list of questions so that Groulien can answer them. Sorry if any of these ansewers ansewer your question.

Groulien will probably add some questions to and ansewer them.

I have no idea about TeamSpeak, so it will help me out too.

1) What is Teamspeak?

A voicechat program

2) Is there a specific server I should join... if so what is the name of it?

There is no specific server yet

3) Is TeamSpeak Virus, Spyware, etc free?

It's freeware, free to use software. Not a virus, not spyware.

4)Where can I download TeamSpeak? I got the ansewer to that:

http://www.goteamspeak.com/?page=downloads

5) Does the same rules apply to TeamSpeak as it does in the Forum rules?

Just try to stay friendly, that's my own personal rule.

6) Do I have to download both the client & the server? Yes, in order to chit chat.

You must have the client.

Thats all I can come up with.

For a whole lot more FAQS go here: http://www.goteamspeak.com/?page=faq

I ansewed what I could.
I (Groulien) have answered in blue.
