Re: Internet connection speeds
Yea Yea Yea...give Comcast a break, they strive for user Speeds, and sometimes they need to keep it to a limit... like everything else is in life, "A LIMIT".
Give it a break sometimes... stop seeding and downloading all of the time, even though you pay for what you use is NO EXCUSE. There's always a limit.

Re: Internet connection speeds
Well, I'm not on ComCast, so I'm not really complaining here
But it's the most-complained-about ISP of this moment on the µTorrent forum - that's got to be some indication, right?
Point is, the limit for BitTorrent traffic is a lot lower than the limit that you pay for, which is against net-neutrality.. You should be allowed to use your full bandwidth all the time for any reason - that's what you pay for.
Many other ISPs are fair to BitTorrent traffic, most bad ones are listed here: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs

Re: Internet connection speeds
Not exactly, look at all of ISP's that you know of and look at the Terms Of Services...and compare them. Just a few examples: At&t: http://my.att.net/csbellsouth/s/s.dll?spage=cg/legal/att.htm&leg=tos
Comcast: http://www.comcast.net/terms/use/
Pretty Similar right? Except At&t has way much more rules and pretty hard to read through all of that.

I see.. they have a ToS that I would never agree with (they evidently don't believe in Net Neutrality)

What do you mean by Net Neutrality?

Re: Internet connection speeds
The standard definition (wiki this)
In short: they are to supply a service (high speed internet connection) and shouldn't care about things that are not their business (such as what you use said connection for)
ComCast is specifically mentioned on that wiki page, and is (according to said page) facing lawsuits over their lack of Net Neurality (specifically: P2P throttling)

ahh sure i may as well give my tuppence worth......

Nothing like your insane speeds Harold, i could certaintly do a lot with those kinda speeds. We certaintly are jealous of the Scandinavian infrastructure.
I realise the ping aint so great either.. but ok. i guess
This costs 70euro per month 50Gb down and 10Gb up limit. Exceeding these limits is internet suicide with speeds reduced to a paltry 4-10 kbs!! That being said it is the best service possible in my area.
This like everything else in Ireland is overpriced and inflated to be something its not, i look forward to this recession to bring things into perspective.

Re: Internet connection speeds
We're jealous of the Scandinavian infrastructure as well.. I've seen plenty of people from there who upload at 500KB/s-2MB/s (or possibly more, but since I only have ~2MB/s download they can't upload faster than that to me anyway) which means their download speed must be equally impressive

Re: Internet connection speeds
Sorry my mistake, ignorant Irishman.
Dont know what made me think Netherlands is in Scandinavia.
Speeds like yours here are an impossibility. so now i am jealous of Hollands tinternet setup.

Re: Internet connection speeds
I suspect they're possible, but not made available to regular customers..
It's kinda like that here as well (there's no way a person would get a 10Gbit line here, but they Are available to big scientific companies)
There are places where you can easily get a 100Mbit connection though (but not where I live )

Re: Internet connection speeds
Agreed, most of the colleges have megafast speed.
on speedtest Digiweb (my provider) is secondary to the only to U.C.D.(main college) Country comparison.. We did our best

Re: Internet connection speeds
My ISP told me today that on the 1st of December they will upgrade my connection for free to 20Mbit/3Mbit
4Mbit/s extra download speed for free won't hurt

Re: Internet connection speeds
The speed has changed
If the upload speed stays like this I will complain.. they don't have any good reason to decrease it by 7%

Re: Internet connection speeds
The speedtest.net isn't good because i tested and say's my download speed is 9830 kb/s and when i do a second test say's my download speed is 8954 kb/s, so ignore the results of this test
Re: Internet connection speeds
There can be several reasons for that...
Some ISPs allow bursting of data, meaning that in the beginning it will be very fast but towards the end of the test it will slow - and if you test again quickly after that it may still be slow (or it will slow down earlier)
Or the server that you (or itself, if it's default) choose isn't good enough (too heavy use, etc)
Some other test, like the speakeasy speed test, are even worse. The speakeasy test gives absolute bullshit results for Europeans (and probably other non-americans as well)
I don't know how accurate its results are for Americans.
DSLReports (http://www.dslreports.com/) has a lot of links to speed tests (its own are once again only useful for americans - discrimination??) the quality and tweaking tests are really good though, be sure to test.

Re: Internet connection speeds
Www.speedtest.net is very accurate most of the time.... However, remember no speed tester is 100% accurate.
